The Canton High School English Department is seeking an exceptional and dynamic candidate to serve as full-time teacher of English through January 31, 2025. The teacher will join a vibrant and supportive team that places a high priority on equity, collaboration, creativity, flexibility, and commitment to the goals of the district and to our students, families and staff.   

 

Canton High School is an inclusive community for all students and staff and serves over 900 students in grades 9-12.  CHS is elevating the educational experience for our students by cultivating a school culture and climate that promotes academic growth and social-emotional learning for every student, and ensures high-quality teaching and learning through the purposeful design of rigorous and equitable student experiences.

 

The English Department is seeking candidates with a commitment to amplifying a variety of voices in literature and writing, fostering safe and open classroom spaces in which students engage in civil discourse, and supporting students as they become lifelong readers and writers who see these skills as a way to build agency and make change. Relationship building, skillful lesson and unit design, and willingness to collaborate with colleagues are essential skills for this role. A deep understanding of and willingness to learn more about culturally responsive teaching practices is essential to this position. We are eager to find the next member of our team to collaborate with department colleagues in the ongoing development of an inclusive, challenging curriculum.

 

 

JOB SUMMARY

Teachers provide a well-organized, safe, and inclusive class environment in which students make progress toward Massachusetts standards-based curriculum and develop lifelong literacy skills. Teachers foster social and emotional skills to help students become productive and engaged members of society who are comfortable making mistakes, accepting feedback, and navigating challenging work. 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

  1. Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences
  2. Develop dynamic and engaging lesson plans that align with the state standards.
  3. Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities
  4. Prepare the classroom environment, routines, and culture for class activities
  5. Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities
  6. Identify and select appropriate instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs
  7. Use relevant technology to support instruction
  8. Observe and evaluate student’s performance and development and use data to inform instruction
  9. Assign engaging and relevant writing and reading, and provide personal, timely feedback 
  10. Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students
  11. Maintain accurate and complete records of student progress and development
  12. Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing clear and equitable procedures and high expectations and developing appropriate and supportive relationships
  13. Participate in department and staff meetings and parent meetings
  14. Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and student needs
  15. Keep up to date with developments in subject-specific instructional materials and practices, and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid Massachusetts DESE teacher certification that is appropriate for the grade level and subject area assigned. (Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.)
  2. Highly Qualified as per Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE)
  3. Proven ability to relate to a variety of constituencies, including but not limited to: administrators, parents/guardians, teachers, students, and other school staff
  4. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  5. Well-organized practices and strong leadership abilities
  6. Exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills
  7. Working knowledge of relevant instructional technology
  8. Alternatives to the above qualifications as the school department may find appropriate and acceptable

REPORTS TO: Department Chair and Building Principal
